New York City · Stories across the world
About / 01
I’m Ameena Walker, an independent writer, editor and editorial strategist based in New York City. I cover architecture, design, real estate, neighborhoods, transportation, travel, food, hospitality, wellness and culture.
“Spaces are never just backdrops. They hold histories, shape communities and influence how we understand ourselves and one another.”
My work begins with curiosity: about the people who shape a place, the systems that determine how it functions and the details that make it meaningful. Whether I’m writing about a home, a neighborhood, a hotel or a new approach to wellness, I look beyond how something appears to understand why it matters and whom it serves.
Before becoming an independent journalist, I was an editor at Curbed NY, covering the architecture, development and daily life of New York City. I’ve also contributed to publications and platforms including Dwell, Mansion Global, The Architect’s Newspaper, StreetEasy, Business Insider and OpenTable, and worked with editorial teams and growing organizations to give complex ideas clarity, structure and voice.
I studied English Literature, Language and Criticism at Hunter College, with a minor in Cultural Anthropology—an education that continues to inform how I report, ask questions and approach stories across cultures.
“Creation is everything you do. Make something.”
How I Work / 02
The strongest stories emerge from listening closely, researching deeply and staying open to what the reporting reveals.
Design, real estate and travel do not exist in a vacuum. History, culture and community belong in the frame.
I translate layered subjects into engaging, accessible work while preserving their nuance and humanity.
The Work / 03
My reporting experience across architecture, design, food, hospitality and culture brings subject-matter depth to editorial work that needs thoughtful research, a strong point of view and clean execution. I’m also available to help organizations in these fields shape stories that connect with their audiences.
